In all divorce judgments spousal support must be awarded, reserved or barred. There is no mandated formula for spousal support although many attorneys in Washtenaw use the Marginsoft software program as a guideline for figuring alimony. There are a dozen factors that the courts review to determine alimony but many times the determination comes down to the length of the marriage and the income disparity between the parties. The goal of spousal support is to avoid impoverishing one spouse while enriching the other after the marriage. Once awarded, spousal support is always modifiable. Typically, spousal support is barred in the judgment for the higher earning spouse which permanently precludes that spouse asking for it.
