A non-profit corporation (or a low-profit LLC) is not automatically tax-exempt simply because the state has accepted its Articles of Incorporation. In order to be tax exempt, the organization must file a tax-exemption application with the IRS. Depending on the nature of the activities of the non-profit organization, state-level registration may be required as well. We regularly work with start-up nonprofits in preparing and filing the necessary tax-exemption applications and other registrations that are required for those organizations.
